The La cote Oubliée ('The Lost Coast' - sometimes referred to as the "Forgotten Coast") is a 90km stretch of untamed coastline on the extreme South East of New Caledonia between Yate and Thio. It is the only section of coastline in New Caledonia that is not developed.
There are no roads, very few scattered Kanak Villages and one Nickel Mine - accessible only by air and sea.
Liken it to the Abel Tasman National Park except 4-times the size and 10-times more remote. Agghh!! ...now we have your attention!
The coastline is enclosed inside an abundant barrier reef and provides wonderful repetitions of idyllic golden tropical beaches, crystal clear coral reefs, lush jungle-islands, lagoons, rivers and marine life - turtles and dolphins are common sightings most days, whales if you're lucky.
Getting hooked....!?
Imagine paddling for a week on your own within this environment.....
As of June 2008, this trip has been made less than 10 times.
A local adventure company - Terra Aventure have created 4 different trip options and established a map showing 8 great campsites, each about 10km apart (although there are plenty more possibilities).
You could join a commercial trip of 5 days stopping at 4 campsites. However, to experience the real Kanak Island way of life, spending 8-9 days and staying at each of the 8 camps is just superb. Camp 6 is a home-stay with a Kanak family who provide dinner and breakfast.
Some home comforts to break the journey....
There are no phones or shops when paddling the coast - a perfectly enforced break from the twenty first century.
The best time of year for the trip is June, July, August but May and September months are still okay. November-March should be avoided unless you are very experienced kayakers, as the high trade winds thrash the Coast.
